OPEN CALL:

To Bergen, with love

We are inviting artists worldwide to apply to our newest open call for a Fresh Salad Art exhibition in the city of Bergen, Norway.

Artists are asked to make new work responding to a 1920's postcard image from Balholm, modern-day Balestrand, which has been a historic artist community for over 150 years, located in Sognefjord, Norway north of Bergen. Many renowned artists have resided here over time such as Hans Dahl, Emma and Adelsteen Normann, and Hans Gude.

You may respond to the image in any way you like but must remain the same dimensions as the original postcard (9x14cm). This may include collage, painting, drawing or whatever you can think of!

If selected, artists will then carry out the process of sending a postcard from one place to another, delivering the artwork to a UK address. All the postcards will then be brought to Norway and displayed alongside each other, bringing together a variety of interpretations and reimaginations of Balholm from around the world.

This will provide an interesting external insight to Bergen, in the hopes that artists may do their own personal research about the location, culture, and history, inspiring their artwork.

Artwork Criteria:

  • The artwork must respond in some way to the postcard image.

  • The artwork must be exactly 9x14cm in size and be no more than 1cm in thickness.

  • The artwork cannot contain any metal due to needing to pass through airport security.

Location:

The exhibition will be held at Gallery Taxi (@galleri_taxi), the University of Bergen student-led gallery space.

Exhibition dates:

Open: 15th - 16th May 2026

Opening Night: Friday 15th May 2026,  7pm - 9pm

Fees:

If selected, we ask for a contribution of £10 per artist to cover the exhibition costs. This will cover materials and equipment to hang the exhibition as well as posting your work back to you after the exhibition. If you are a current student at the University of Bergen there will be no exhibition fee.

Deadline:

The last day to enter this open call will be 11:59pm, Friday April 17th 2026
